We Hosted "Laughing Together, Learning Together, Feeling Together: Student Exchange and International Cooperation That Only Students Can Do"!

On Saturday, May 12th, we conducted the event "Laughing Together, Learning Together, Feeling Together: Student Exchange and International Cooperation That Only Students Can Do" at JICA Chikyu Hiroba. Our heartfelt appreciation extends to the many attendees who packed the venue.

The event unfolded across four sections, each brimming with engaging content:

The inaugural segment consisted of a debriefing session on the Nepal program held in February. The presenter, Naoya Miyao, a third-year student from the Faculty of Engineering Science at Tokyo University of Science, represented the participants. Following his participation in an AAEE event last November, Miyao-san committed to engaging in the February program.

Navigating Nepal for the first time, Miyao-san encountered a series of experiences. Through these, he gleaned insights into the importance of communicating with students hailing from disparate backgrounds. His presentation underlined that genuine cross-cultural exchange hinges not merely on language proficiency but on a commitment to understanding and sharing feelings.

The second segment saw AAEE President Seki and student assistants Mochizuki and Yoshikawa delve into AAEE's past undertakings and forthcoming prospects. Coinciding with AAEE's 10th anniversary, this year marks the inception of diverse programs addressing global social concerns across various nations. While AAEE's reputation is established abroad, the challenge lies in enhancing visibility within Japan and revitalizing vertical connections among AAEE program participants. In this context, "Team Mero Sathi" was introduced as an upcoming initiative. This venture aims to impart diverse values and experiences to junior and senior high school students - the forthcoming leaders of society - through nationwide lectures and classes, further augmenting awareness of AAEE.

The third part of the event featured presentations by past participants across four themes: "International Cooperation," "Intercultural Exchange," "Education," and "Language." These speakers recounted how their participation in AAEE programs ignited interest and subsequently shaped their trajectories.

Miho Yamamori, a third-year student at Sophia University's Department of Global Studies, tackled the "International Cooperation" theme. Driven by a longstanding interest, she joined the AAEE Vietnam program upon entering university. Yet, her experience revealed a facet she hadn't anticipated - the joyous smiles of the local populace. Inspired by her Vietnam experience, she ventured to Africa's Republic of Malawi, redefining her intrigue in culture and humanity.

Sakiki Nakazato, a sophomore in Sophia University's Faculty of Global Studies, addressed "Intercultural Exchange." Her Vietnam program involvement affirmed the indispensability of cross-cultural interactions. Participating in the World Youth Ship program illuminated the significance of cultivating global friendships. These cumulative experiences nurtured a multifaceted perspective within Saki-san, reshaping her worldview.

"Education" was Chiaki Sasagawa's focus, a third-year student in Sophia University's Department of Education. Introduced to the Nepal program by a senior, she embarked on an enlightening journey. Her subsequent education in the Philippines cemented her understanding of education's role, spurring her ongoing pursuit of learning and growth.

Hiroaki Kitano, a freshman in his working career, discussed "Language." Having engaged in both Nepal and Vietnam programs, Kitano-san underscored the value of effective communication. Proficiency in English is undoubtedly beneficial, yet meaningful interaction transcends linguistic barriers. His testimony underscored the importance of empathy and mutual understanding.

These presentations collectively conveyed the diverse impact of AAEE programs, with each participant's journey yielding unique growth and realizations. Given the presence of this year's Vietnam program participants, this session undoubtedly enriched their insights.

The fourth segment facilitated interactions between event attendees and presenters. This interactive engagement enabled participants to engage more closely with presenters, extracting deeper insights and expanding their horizons. The post-event atmosphere continued to buzz, underscoring attendees' enrichment.

This event encompassed more than presenters' narratives; it facilitated mutual learning, fostering an understanding of AAEE's scope. We trust that the event illuminated AAEE's mission and kindled curiosity about our endeavors. Our heartfelt thanks extend to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan and JICA for their sponsorship, all attendees, and those who facilitated the event.

Looking forward, we remain committed to updating AAEE activities on our website and Facebook page, inviting your continued cooperation and support.
